Logan MacPhail, a 17-year-old, has been identified as the murderer of his ex-girlfriend, Holly Newton, following a court decision to lift reporting restrictions due to public interest. MacPhail, who was 16 at the time of the murder, stalked Holly, 15, after she ended their relationship and attacked her in an alleyway, inflicting 36 stab wounds. Holly's murder occurred in Hexham, Northumberland, after MacPhail traveled from Gateshead, following her from school before the attack. A teenage boy who tried to intervene during the attack was also stabbed but survived. The case has sparked discussions about knife crime and violence against women, with the judge emphasizing the importance of public awareness of such crimes. MacPhail, who attended a special school and has learning difficulties, is due to be sentenced later this month.
