A roof collapse at the Novi Sad railway station in northern Serbia has resulted in the deaths of at least eight people, with several others injured. Interior Minister Ivica Dacic confirmed that rescue operations are ongoing, with emergency teams still working to reach two individuals trapped under the debris. This incident, described as a 'major tragedy' by Dacic and Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic, occurred despite the station having recently undergone renovations, reopening in July 2024. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the collapse and accountability for the structure's safety. Surveillance footage revealed that the collapse happened suddenly while people were using the station on a sunny day. The station's roof, built in 1964, was reportedly not part of the recent renovation work carried out by Chinese companies.
