Wildfire Shuts Marseille Airport, Mayor Issues Warning
A fast-moving wildfire near Les Pennes-Mirabeau has forced the closure of Marseille Provence Airport, France’s fourth-largest airport, disrupting numerous flights at the start of the French summer holiday period. The fire, intensified by winds up to 70 km/h and recent heatwaves, has burned at least 30 hectares and prompted large-scale firefighting efforts involving 168 firefighters, helicopters, and dozens of engines. Residents in northern Marseille and surrounding areas have been urged to stay indoors, keep windows and doors closed, and avoid travel, with some evacuations reported. The mayor of Marseille has warned that the fire is 'at the gates' of the city, emphasizing the need for vigilance. No casualties have been reported so far. The incident highlights the increased risk and frequency of wildfires in southern France due to ongoing heatwaves and strong winds.
