Commonwealth Meeting Addresses Gender Inequality, Climate Challenges

The Women in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Advocacy Network (WinWASH) has raised alarms about the adverse effects of climate change on vulnerable communities, particularly emphasizing the critical roles women and children play in water collection and sanitation. They are calling for a green economy transition that supports gender-responsive climate action and investments in climate-resilient WASH infrastructure. Concurrently, the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa is addressing gender inequality and the structural discrimination women face, with Commonwealth Secretary General Patricia Scotland urging collective action to combat these issues. The meeting also underscores the climate challenges faced by island nations, with leaders expected to make a declaration on ocean protection. However, progress on climate commitments remains slow, as exemplified by the G7's repeated promises of net-zero emissions by 2050, which seem increasingly unattainable. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has warned that even achieving net-zero by 2050 may not be sufficient to prevent dangerous global temperature rises.
