Canada Seeks LNG Supply Cooperation With Germany, Poland
Prime Minister Mark Carney has initiated renewed discussions with Germany regarding the supply of Canadian liquefied natural gas (LNG), marking a shift from the previous government's reluctance to pursue such exports. Carney highlighted plans to expand port infrastructure, including the Contrecoeur expansion at the Port of Montreal and revitalizing Churchill port in Manitoba, to facilitate LNG shipments to Europe within five years. Energy Minister Tim Hodgson emphasized that Canadian LNG offers European buyers a stable supply shielded from geopolitical risks and lower carbon emissions due to Canada's methane regulations and clean energy use. Poland's ambassador to Canada also urged Ottawa to boost LNG exports directly to Europe to avoid inflated prices caused by rerouting Canadian LNG through the United States. During Carney's European visits, Canada and Germany signed a Joint Declaration of Intent to enhance cooperation on critical minerals and explore new energy export opportunities, reflecting a broad strategy to strengthen economic ties and energy security. These developments represent a significant policy pivot, with Canadian officials expressing cautious optimism about the feasibility and timing of LNG export projects.
