Chu Kai-pong, a 27-year-old man from Hong Kong, pleaded guilty to sedition under the city's new Safeguarding National Security Ordinance after being arrested for wearing a T-shirt and mask with pro-democracy slogans. This marks the first conviction under the Ordinance enacted in March 2024. The slogans, 'Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times' and 'five demands, not one less,' were associated with the 2019 pro-democracy protests. Chu admitted his intention was to remind people of the protests. The new security law increases the maximum penalty for sedition from two to seven years, or up to ten years if foreign collusion is involved. Critics, including the U.S. government, have expressed concerns that the law's vague provisions on sedition could suppress dissent.
