Off-Duty Detroit Officer Killed in Shootout
An off-duty Detroit police officer, who was a member of the Special Response Team, was fatally shot by fellow officers on Monday after he opened fire on them in an apparent 'suicide by cop' attempt. The 45-year-old officer, who had served with the department for 13 years, was reportedly undergoing a mental health crisis and had recently returned to full duty after dealing with a degenerative medical condition. During the incident, he wounded two officers, one in the leg and another in the thigh, before being shot dead by a responding officer. Detroit Police Chief James White emphasized the mental health challenges faced by law enforcement, acknowledging that the department is not immune to such crises. The wounded officers are in stable condition, and the Michigan State Police will conduct an investigation into the incident. The event was described as a tragedy by Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, highlighting the bravery of the responding officers.
