Black Bear Sightings Surge in More US States

Black bear sightings are increasing in multiple U.S. regions, with recent incidents in Colorado, Mississippi, Missouri, Illinois, and the St. Louis area, largely due to expanding bear populations and habitats. In Colorado, a yearling bear was tranquilized and relocated after entering suburban neighborhoods, leading officials to advise securing trash and removing bird feeders. Mississippi has seen its black bear population triple over the past two decades, with recent sightings in DeSoto County prompting warnings for residents not to approach or feed bears. Missouri's black bear population has grown from about 300 in 2010 to nearly 1,000, with more frequent urban sightings, while Illinois is also experiencing increased bear activity. Conversely, New Jersey reports a 28% decrease in black bear sightings and incidents compared to last year. Experts stress the importance of not providing unnatural food sources and maintaining a healthy fear of humans in bears to ensure safety.
