LAPD Sergeant, Civilian Die in 405 Freeway Crash
A fatal multi-vehicle crash occurred early Monday, June 23, on the southbound 405 Freeway near Brentwood, resulting in the deaths of an LAPD sergeant and a civilian motorist. The sergeant had stopped to assist at the scene of a separate crash involving a silver truck blocking the HOV lane when another vehicle struck both him and the motorist. Three vehicles were involved in total. Both victims were transported to hospitals but died from their injuries; the sergeant was pronounced dead at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, with LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell and Mayor Karen Bass present. The incident prompted a SigAlert, shutting down southbound lanes for hours and causing significant traffic delays. Authorities have not released the names of the victims.
