USDA Allocates $2 Billion to Minority Farmers

The Biden administration has announced over $2 billion in direct payments to Black and minority farmers who faced discrimination from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). More than 23,000 farmers will receive payments ranging from $10,000 to $500,000, with an additional 20,000 applicants receiving between $3,500 and $6,000. USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack emphasized that the aid serves as an acknowledgment of past injustices rather than compensation for losses. The payments stem from the Discrimination Financial Assistance Program created by the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, following a historical pattern of discriminatory lending practices against Black farmers. While the aid is welcomed by advocates like John Boyd Jr., they argue it falls short of addressing the deeper systemic issues, as Boyd continues to pursue a federal lawsuit for comprehensive debt relief. The allocation also reflects broader efforts to rectify inequities in federal support for farmers, especially in southern states like Mississippi and Alabama.
