The Biden administration has announced over $2 billion in direct payments to Black and minority farmers who faced discrimination from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). More than 23,000 farmers will receive payments ranging from $10,000 to $500,000, with an additional 20,000 applicants receiving between $3,500 and $6,000. While the aid is welcomed by advocates like John Boyd Jr., they argue it falls short of addressing the deeper systemic issues, as Boyd continues to pursue a federal lawsuit for comprehensive debt relief. The allocation also reflects broader efforts to rectify inequities in federal support for farmers, especially in southern states like Mississippi and Alabama.
