Vietnamese real estate tycoon Truong My Lan, already sentenced to death for a $12.5 billion fraud, began her second trial on new charges of fraudulent appropriation of property and money laundering. This case is part of Vietnam's intensified anti-corruption campaign, which has implicated high-level officials and resulted in significant political shifts. Lan allegedly raised $1.2 billion illegally from investors and transferred over $4.5 billion internationally through her company, Van Thinh Phat. She and 33 co-defendants face trial that is expected to last a month. The previous fraud case involved swindling cash from the Saigon Commercial Bank, affecting around 36,000 victims and leading to rare public protests. Lan's appeal against her death sentence is pending, with no date announced yet.
