Memphis-Shelby Schools Accept xAI Donation for Four South Memphis Renovations

The Memphis-Shelby County School Board approved an in-kind donation from Elon Musk's company xAI to upgrade four schools near their data centers in South Memphis, including John P. Freeman Optional School, Fairley High School, Mitchell High School, and Westwood High School. The improvements, valued at over $15,000, will cover a wide range of enhancements such as HVAC systems, lighting, windows, athletic fields, specialized areas like chemistry and technology labs, and landscaping. The donation aims to support the community and develop local talent to operate jobs created by the nearby tech innovation hub. However, the proposal faced opposition from some board members and community residents concerned about environmental impacts and skepticism over the company’s motives. Supporters, including local officials and business leaders, emphasized xAI's genuine commitment to the community and the potential long-term benefits of the investment. The school board passed the proposal with a 7 to 2 vote despite the divided opinions.
