Eastwood Weighs Irish Presidential Run, Field Uncertain

Former SDLP leader and Foyle MP Colum Eastwood has confirmed he is considering a run for the Irish presidency, citing encouragement from others and the limited field of candidates, but says he will take time before making a decision. Eastwood stepped down as SDLP leader in October 2024 and emphasizes that any decision will not be made hastily. Amid speculation about potential Fianna Fáil support, Taoiseach Micheál Martin stated he is unaware of any engagement with Eastwood and said the party has not begun its own candidate deliberations, expressing surprise at the reports but describing Eastwood as an effective parliamentarian. The presidential race remains open to all, with Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O’Neill not ruling out a candidacy and Sinn Féin still considering its approach. The election is set to take place by November 2025 as incumbent President Michael D. Higgins is ineligible to run after two terms. Eastwood plans to take the summer to weigh his options.
