Woman Fatally Shot by Fairfax County Officer

A Fairfax County police officer fatally shot a 33-year-old woman after she attacked him with a knife during a welfare check at her Reston apartment on Monday. The incident occurred when the officer, responding to a call from the woman's mental health provider, was slashed in the face as she opened her door and lunged at him. Despite the officer's attempts to de-escalate the situation, the woman continued to advance, prompting him to fire several shots. The officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and has been placed on administrative duties pending an investigation. This marks the first officer-involved shooting in Fairfax County in over a year and a half, with police expected to release body camera footage of the incident within 30 days.
