Pope Leo XIV Urges Unity at Chicago Event
More than 30,000 people gathered at Chicago's Rate Field (White Sox Park) to celebrate Pope Leo XIV, the first American-born pontiff, with a Mass led by Cardinal Blase Cupich and a 7.5-minute video message from the pope. In his address, Pope Leo XIV, a lifelong White Sox fan and Chicago native, urged Chicagoans and young people worldwide to set aside egotism, embrace hope, and build community. He avoided political commentary, focusing on unity and encouragement amid national protests. The event featured music, tributes to the pope’s Chicago roots, and was emceed by Bulls announcer Chuck Swirsky. Tickets, initially $5, sold out quickly with resale prices soaring up to $1,200, underscoring the excitement of the historic occasion. The celebration was broadcast live for those unable to attend.
