Protests Intensify in Mozambique After Elections

Mozambicans are experiencing escalating protests against the results of the October 9 elections, which the opposition, led by Venancio Mondlane, has deemed fraudulent. These protests have resulted in violent clashes with police, who have used tear gas and rubber bullets, leading to the deaths of at least two individuals. Demonstrators are blocking major roads in Maputo and the Ressano Garcia border crossing with South Africa, significantly disrupting traffic and trade. The situation has intensified following the accidental injuring of a protester by a military vehicle, which has fueled public outrage. Despite the unrest, some public services continue to operate normally, although transportation has been severely impacted as drivers avoid the roads. The protests reflect widespread dissatisfaction with the ruling Frelimo party, which has been in power since 1975.
