Ashok Kumar, a 77-year-old German national of Indian descent, died on August 27 while being treated at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital in Delhi after his arrest for allegedly smuggling six kilograms of cocaine concealed in soft toys. Kumar was detained by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on July 26 based on an Interpol tip-off and was later transferred to Tihar Jail after five days in police custody. His condition deteriorated, leading to his hospitalization on August 14. Following his death, the Delhi Police contacted the German embassy to arrange for an autopsy, pending family consent. Kumar's advocate indicated that his family, particularly his brother in the US, suspects foul play in his death. The cause of death remains undetermined until the postmortem examination is conducted.
