Study Links Moderate Coffee Consumption to Healthier Aging in 47,000 Women
A new study presented at the American Society for Nutrition meeting reveals that women who drank one to three cups of caffeinated coffee daily in their 50s were more likely to reach older age free from major chronic diseases and maintain good cognitive, physical, and mental health. The research, which followed more than 47,000 women over several decades as part of the Nurses’ Health Study, found that these benefits were specific to caffeinated coffee, with no similar effects observed for tea, decaffeinated coffee, or caffeinated sodas. Experts note that coffee contains caffeine and polyphenols, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may contribute to reducing risks of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and liver conditions. However, some caution is advised as coffee can interact negatively with certain common medications, including painkillers, antidepressants, and blood pressure drugs, potentially reducing their effectiveness or increasing side effects. While the study is observational and cannot prove causation, researchers adjusted for various lifestyle and demographic factors to support their findings. Overall, moderate coffee consumption appears to offer health-promoting effects as part of a balanced lifestyle, but individuals should consider personal health circumstances and medication interactions.
