The Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. will debut a year-long exhibition titled 'Basquiat x Banksy' starting September 29, 2024, highlighting the relationship between iconic artists Jean-Michel Basquiat and Banksy. The exhibition will feature Basquiat's 1982 painting 'Boy and Dog in a Johnnypump,' which was purchased for over $100 million, alongside Banksy's homage 'Banksquiat. Boy and Dog in Stop and Search,' depicting the same figures in a different context. This marks the first time either artist's work will be shown at the Hirshhorn, coinciding with the museum's 50th anniversary. In addition to the main pieces, the exhibit will showcase 20 smaller works by Basquiat and screen the film 'Downtown 81.' Public programming will accompany the exhibition, including a lecture by art professor Richard J. Powell on October 10. The exhibition aims to explore the influence of street art in museum contexts, as articulated by Hirshhorn director Melissa Chiu.
