Dangerous Heat Wave Grips New Mexico
New Mexico is currently experiencing a dangerous heat wave, with triple-digit temperatures and near-record highs across much of the state, including Albuquerque and Farmington. The New Mexico Department of Health has issued warnings urging residents to take precautions, especially to protect vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and those with health conditions. Albuquerque has set up cooling centers providing air conditioning, water, sunscreen, and food for those in need. Since April 1, there have been 120 heat-related emergency department visits statewide. While some isolated storms are possible, most areas will remain dry, and the heat is expected to persist into early next week before a minor cooldown. Residents are advised to seek help if they experience symptoms of heat exhaustion.
