Mexico City Mayor’s Secretary, Adviser Shot Dead in Broad Daylight
Two senior aides to Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada, personal secretary Ximena Guzmán and adviser José Muñoz, were fatally shot in a targeted attack by gunmen on a motorcycle in the central Moderna neighborhood. The attack, captured on surveillance footage, involved at least one helmeted assailant firing at close range before fleeing, prompting an investigation supported by federal and local agencies including the National Intelligence Center and Mexico City's Attorney General’s Office. Mayor Brugada and President Claudia Sheinbaum, both members of the Morena party and political allies, condemned the killings and vowed that those responsible would face justice, emphasizing no impunity will be tolerated. This incident is part of a disturbing pattern of rising violence against political figures in Mexico ahead of the 2025 elections, with similar attacks reported recently in Veracruz, Jalisco, and Guerrero, many believed linked to organized crime. Although violent assaults on politicians are more common in regional areas, attacks in Mexico City itself remain rare yet deeply concerning. Authorities continue to analyze evidence and pursue leads in hopes of identifying and apprehending the perpetrators.
