Natural gas service was cut to 135 homes in the Portuguese Bend area of Rancho Palos Verdes, California, due to severe land movement from a long-standing landslide, which has been exacerbated by heavy rains since spring 2023. Southern California Gas Co. cited 'significant strain' on its infrastructure and announced a $2,500 compensation for affected residents to help with immediate needs. The area is experiencing land movement at rates up to 9 inches per week, leading to damage to roads and utilities. Despite protests from residents and city officials, the gas shutoff proceeded as planned on Monday, with no current plans to discontinue water or sewer services. Ongoing mitigation efforts include draining water from the landslide area to slow movement, though results may take up to six months. Earlier this year, earth movement forced the dismantling of the historic Wayfarers Chapel to prevent further damage.
