Wildfires Force Evacuations in Greece and Turkey
Devastating wildfires have swept across both Greece and Turkey, forcing thousands of residents and tourists to evacuate as extreme heat and dry conditions fuel the crisis. In Turkey, over 1,700 people were evacuated near Bursa, with more than 1,100 firefighters battling the flames and major highways closed. The emergency has been intensified by record-breaking temperatures, including 50.5°C in Sirnak province, and authorities have taken legal action against nearly 100 suspects in relation to the fires. At least 13 people, including firefighters and rescue volunteers, have died in Turkey. Meanwhile, Greece is struggling with wildfires on its largest islands and near Athens, as temperatures are expected to reach up to 45°C and emergency services are stretched thin. Officials in both countries warn that the situation may worsen in the coming days.
