EU Approves 15th Sanctions Package Against Russia

European Union ambassadors have reached a consensus on a new sanctions package against Russia, focusing primarily on its shadow fleet of oil tankers that facilitate illicit transport of oil and fuel. The package, which awaits approval from foreign ministers, targets around 50 vessels and aims to restrict entities and individuals supporting Russia's military efforts in Ukraine, including Chinese firms linked to drone manufacturing. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed support for the sanctions, highlighting their importance in maintaining pressure on the Kremlin. The sanctions mark the fifteenth round aimed at disrupting Russia's oil trade and will broaden the net to include more officials and companies involved in circumventing existing restrictions. The final details are expected to be published following the foreign ministers' meeting on Monday, with the sanctions anticipated to significantly impact Russia's oil export economy. Over 2,300 individuals and entities are currently subject to EU sanctions since the onset of the conflict in February 2022.
