Antisemitic Incidents Decline Globally but Remain High in 2024
Multiple reports, including Tel Aviv University's Annual Antisemitism Worldwide Report, indicate that antisemitic incidents surged globally following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, peaking in the final months of 2023 before declining in 2024. However, incident levels in 2024 remain significantly higher than pre-war figures, challenging assumptions of a steadily intensifying trend due to the Gaza conflict. The United States saw a moderate increase in antisemitic activity, with particular spikes in cities like New York, Chicago, Denver, and Austin, while Australia and Italy experienced especially sharp rises in incidents. In the U.S. Southeast, an Anti-Defamation League audit found that antisemitic incidents on college campuses more than doubled from 2023 to 2024, even as overall regional incidents declined. Experts highlight that the wave of antisemitism was most pronounced when Israel appeared vulnerable and stress that, despite recent declines, antisemitic sentiment remains deeply embedded and elevated globally. The reports also note deficiencies in enforcement and response, with very few perpetrators facing arrest or prosecution.
