Ex-Police Officer Guilty of Illegally Accessing Case Files

Molly Bury, a 28-year-old former police constable with Lancashire Police, was found guilty of illegally accessing the Police National Computer to share confidential information about several cases, including that of Nicola Bulley, with friends and family. Despite facing potential jail time, Bury received a six-month suspended sentence after the court deemed her actions 'profoundly immature' rather than malicious. Known locally as 'hot cop', Bury shared sensitive details about various cases without any policing purpose, including a rape case, the death of a baby, and a robbery suspect's planned arrest. Her misconduct was uncovered when her mother was overheard discussing the leaked information, prompting an investigation into Bury's unauthorized access. Most of her unauthorized access occurred while she was on leave, and she resigned from the police force during the investigation. Nicola Bulley was found dead in the River Wyre in February 2023, with a coroner later ruling her death as accidental drowning.
