DR Congo Senate Lifts Immunity of Ex-President Kabila Amid Rebel Allegations
The Democratic Republic of Congo's Senate has voted to lift former President Joseph Kabila's lifetime immunity, opening the way for prosecution on charges including treason, war crimes, and support for the M23 rebel group that controls parts of the eastern region. Kabila, who ruled from 2001 to 2019, denies the allegations and condemns the justice system as politically motivated, calling the current government a "dictatorship" that undermines democracy and the constitution. His removal of immunity follows accusations by President Félix Tshisekedi's administration that Kabila aided the M23 rebels, escalating political tensions and leading to the suspension of Kabila's party, the People's Party for Reconstruction and Democracy. Kabila's critics warn that his trial could further destabilize the country, which has faced ongoing conflict in its mineral-rich east for over a decade. In a recent address, Kabila outlined a 12-point plan to resolve the insecurity but criticized the government's handling of the economy, corruption, and security. The developments pose challenges to peace efforts in the region and raise concerns about the impact on regional stability and international economic interests.
