The West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) has cancelled the medical registration of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, following his arrest in connection with the rape and murder of a trainee doctor. Ghosh, who is in CBI custody, did not respond to a show-cause notice issued on September 7. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) Bengal chapter had urged the WBMC to revoke his registration, citing his involvement in tampering with evidence and facilitating the hurried cremation of the victim's body. The WBMC's decision follows mounting pressure from the medical community and allegations of corruption within the council itself. Ghosh and police officer Abhijit Mondal are accused of delaying the filing of the First Information Report (FIR) and being absent from the crime scene. The sole accused in the murder, civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, has already been arrested.
