Detroit Councilman Fred Durhal III enters mayoral race

Detroit City Councilman Fred Durhal III has officially launched his campaign for mayor, aiming to succeed current Mayor Mike Duggan, who will not seek re-election as he runs for governor. Speaking at the Boys and Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan, Durhal emphasized his commitment to improving neighborhoods, enhancing transportation, and continuing community programs that address gun violence. He joins a competitive field that includes Council President Mary Sheffield and former Councilwoman Saunteel Jenkins, both of whom have also announced their candidacies. Durhal, who has been a council member since 2021 and previously served in the Michigan House of Representatives, recognizes the city's progress but believes there is much more to be done. During his announcement, he highlighted the need for visionary leadership to tackle ongoing issues. The mayoral election is set for November 2024.
