Karen Read's Retrial Set to Begin After Appeals Court Denial

Karen Read's second murder trial is set to begin next week after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit denied her federal appeal to dismiss two charges against her. Read is accused of killing her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe, by hitting him with her SUV in January 2022 and leaving him in the cold. Her first trial ended in a mistrial due to a hung jury, and her defense has argued that retrying her on these charges would constitute double jeopardy. The federal appeals court upheld the decision of a lower court, affirming that there was no final vote on the jury's part during the first trial. Read's defense maintains that she is a victim of a coverup related to the case. Jury selection for the retrial is expected to take several weeks, starting April 1.
