Four men from Ocean County, New Jersey, have been charged with conspiracy and trafficking in firearms, including 'ghost guns.' James Hyres, Dennis McMickle, James Opalenik, and Edward Trost III are accused of operating a gun trafficking conspiracy from April to May 2024, during which Hyres manufactured privately made firearms using a 3D printer. The group allegedly sold these firearms to a confidential FBI source, with none of the defendants holding the necessary federal licenses to deal or manufacture firearms. Hyres and McMickle face additional charges for possessing firearms as previously convicted felons, while McMickle and Opalenik are also charged with possessing firearms with obliterated serial numbers. Hyres and Opalenik were arrested on July 29, 2024, while McMickle and Trost were already in custody on unrelated charges. The investigation was led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey, with support from the ATF and local law enforcement agencies.
