The Karnataka government has withheld the 'Best Principal' award initially announced for BG Ramakrishna, principal of the Government Pre-University College in Kundapur, Udupi, due to his controversial role in the 2021-22 hijab row. Ramakrishna had enforced a government order by asking Muslim students wearing hijabs to stand outside the classroom, which led to significant backlash. Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and other activists criticized his selection, arguing his actions were discriminatory. Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa stated that the committee overlooked the issue and the award is on hold pending further review. Critics argue this decision appeases communal forces, while supporters say it tarnishes the award's prestige.
