Roshel, Swebor Establish Canada’s First Ballistic Steel Facility
Canadian armored vehicle manufacturer Roshel has partnered with Swedish steel producer Swebor to establish Canada’s first dedicated ballistic-grade steel production facility. The partnership, supported by Canadian Innovation Minister Mélanie Joly and Defence Procurement Secretary of State Stephen Fuhr, aims to leverage Canadian iron ore and domestic steelmaking capabilities alongside Swedish expertise to reduce dependency on foreign suppliers and strengthen Canada’s defense industrial base. This initiative will create skilled jobs, introduce advanced manufacturing technologies, and enhance supply chain security, enabling Roshel to oversee the full production cycle from raw ballistic steel to vehicle assembly. The joint intellectual property ownership between Roshel and Swebor ensures long-term collaboration and innovation, contributing to Canada’s industrial sovereignty and national defense readiness. The project underscores the importance of deepening transatlantic defense cooperation amid global supply chain pressures and ambitions to bolster Canada’s defense sector independent of the United States. Roshel plans a phased production approach, initially utilizing facilities in Brampton and Mississauga, with expansion contingent on infrastructure capacity.
