Maureen Mwanawasa, Former First Lady of Zambia, Dies

Maureen Mwanawasa, the former First Lady of Zambia and wife of late President Levy Mwanawasa, passed away at the age of 61 after a short illness. She was an accomplished lawyer and a dedicated advocate for social justice, women’s rights, and community development, founding the Maureen Mwanawasa Community Initiative and serving as a former president of the Organisation of African First Ladies Against HIV/AIDS. Despite being seen as a potential successor to her husband following his death in 2008, she did not pursue a political career, although she ran for mayor of Lusaka in 2016.
