In the first ODI of the series against New Zealand at Bay Oval, England captain Harry Brook played a stunning innings, scoring a career-best 135 runs off 101 balls to rescue England from a dire position of 56-6. Brook's knock included 11 sixes, equalling a rare feat against New Zealand, and was marked by aggressive hitting including three consecutive sixes to reach his century. Earlier in the innings, New Zealand bowlers Zakary Foulkes and Matt Henry dismantled England's top order, with Foulkes taking four wickets and Henry two. Brook shared a crucial 87-run partnership with Jamie Overton, who scored 46, to push England's total to 223 before being dismissed by New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner. This innings marked Brook's fourth century against New Zealand on their home soil, equalling Joe Root for the most centuries by an England player in New Zealand across formats, and helped him surpass 1000 ODI runs in just 33 innings. England had previously won the T20 series 1-0, with Brook also showcasing his power-hitting prowess in T20 matches including a notable six off Santner in the second T20I.
