NYC Teachers Union Endorses Zohran Mamdani for Mayor
The United Federation of Teachers (UFT), representing nearly 200,000 members, has officially endorsed Zohran Mamdani for New York City mayor, citing his commitment to protecting premium-free health care, reducing class sizes, expanding pre-K, and revamping mayoral control of public schools into a co-governance model involving educators and parents. This endorsement marks the union's first candidate endorsement for the primary or general election, reflecting a shift to support Mamdani after a previously neutral stance during the primary. The endorsement has sparked backlash from some Jewish educators who oppose Mamdani's anti-Israel views, feeling the union has abandoned part of its base. UFT President Michael Mulgrew emphasized the need for a mayor who can safeguard public education and workers' rights against federal attacks while making the city more affordable and safer. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has criticized Mamdani, warning that a communist mayor would lead to a federal takeover of New York City, a claim rebuffed by Mamdani's campaign and Governor Kathy Hochul who affirm that local voters decide the city’s leadership. Mamdani has also garnered endorsements from other major unions like Local 32BJ SEIU and the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council, consolidating his labor support ahead of the general election.
