Major Gas Leak Prompts Downtown Los Altos Evacuations
A “significant” gas leak was reported Monday morning in Parking Plaza North near First Street in downtown Los Altos, first reported about 10–10:17 a.m., with the leak audible. Santa Clara County Fire Department and Los Altos police, working in unified command, ordered mandatory evacuations and warned the public to avoid the downtown area roughly bounded by Foothill Expressway, Edith Avenue and Main Street. PG&E crews responded and, according to one report, secured the leak shortly before 11 a.m. Fire and police remained on scene clearing and securing the area and advising residents and businesses, and officials said the situation was still developing.
