Germany Unveils Nvidia-Powered Jupiter, Europe's Fastest AI Supercomputer
Germany has launched Jupiter, Europe’s first exascale supercomputer and the continent’s most powerful, powered by Nvidia chips and assembled with French and German partners. The system, inaugurated by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, ranks as the fourth-fastest globally and is capable of performing one quintillion operations per second, roughly equivalent to 10 million laptops combined. Jupiter aims to bolster Europe’s competitiveness against the U.S. and China in AI-driven economies, supporting scientific research in biotechnology, climate modeling, and materials simulation while promoting digital sovereignty by reducing reliance on foreign cloud providers. The supercomputer’s architecture is based on Nvidia Grace Hopper technology, featuring nearly 24,000 accelerators across thousands of nodes, and delivering strong energy efficiency with an estimated build cost near €500 million. Officials emphasize the importance of making Jupiter accessible to startups and companies to expand AI capabilities and signal Europe’s commitment to leading in high-performance computing. Meanwhile, in Central and Eastern Europe, Poland’s Beyond.pl has also activated an Nvidia-based supercomputer called F.I.N., designed to provide sovereign AI infrastructure services and foster innovation in the region.
