Fall Film Festivals Highlight Premieres and Tributes
Several fall film festivals will showcase awards-season hopefuls, international premieres and tributes. The Miami Film Festival’s Gems strand will honor Ethan Hawke with the Variety Virtuoso Award and screen films including Richard Linklater’s Blue Moon and Ugo Bienvenu’s animated sci‑fi Arco. The 38th Tokyo International Film Festival (Oct. 27–Nov. 5) shortlisted 15 films from nearly 2,000 entries, including Japanese competition titles Sakashita Yuichiro’s comedy‑drama Blonde and Nakagawa Ryutaro’s Echoes of Motherhood starring Kawase Naomi. The Chagrin Documentary Film Festival (Oct. 7–12; streaming Oct. 13–19) will present 75 documentaries from 32 countries, opening with Colin Hanks’s John Candy: I Like Me and offering panels and filmmaker appearances, while Fantastic Fest in Austin continues to spotlight global genre cinema with selections such as Bartosz Kowalski’s 13 Days Til Summer. MUBI FEST Buenos Aires (Oct. 16–19) will stage Argentine premieres including Palme d’Or winner Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just an Accident, alongside restorations, tributes, live events and immersive installations, and Toronto’s International Film Festival of South Asia (Oct. 9–19) will present over 100 premieres and special events in partnership with CBC.
