Study Introduces AI-Enhanced Thinking System

Recent research from Università Cattolica introduces 'System 0', a new cognitive framework where artificial intelligence (AI) acts as an external cognitive aid that enhances human thinking alongside traditional thought processes, System 1 and System 2. This system leverages AI's data-processing capabilities to assist in decision-making while raising concerns about over-reliance on technology, which could diminish human cognitive autonomy. The study emphasizes the importance of maintaining critical thinking when interpreting AI outputs to avoid passivity in thought. Ethical guidelines are suggested to ensure responsible AI integration in decision-making, as the interaction between humans and AI could significantly alter the cognitive landscape. The findings, published in Nature Human Behaviour, underscore the necessity of guiding the development of System 0 to maximize its potential benefits while safeguarding independent thought.
