Zaque Sykes Fatally Shot in Compton Beauty Store

A man identified by authorities as Zaque Sykes, 42, was shot and killed Sunday afternoon inside Pink Beauty Supply on East Alondra Boulevard in Compton after allegedly following and groping a female customer, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. Employees and customers said Sykes became aggressive, damaged merchandise, threatened to kill and harm people in the store, and was believed to be holding a knife. A female customer in her 50s fired a warning shot and then a second shot that struck Sykes when he turned toward her; he was pronounced dead at the scene. The shooter surrendered the firearm, cooperated with deputies and was not arrested; investigators say employees corroborated the account and currently do not believe there is criminal culpability, while the Los Angeles County District Attorney will decide whether charges are warranted. Detectives are seeking additional witnesses and asked anyone with information to contact the LASD Homicide Bureau.
