Canada Invests $200M in Cedar LNG Project in Kitimat
The Canadian government has announced a CAD 200 million investment in the Cedar LNG Project, a joint venture between Pembina Pipeline Corporation and the Haisla Nation, which aims to develop one of the lowest-emitting liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities globally. The project, valued at nearly CAD 6 billion, will feature a floating LNG processing facility and marine export terminal in Kitimat, British Columbia, and is expected to be operational by late 2028. The facility will be powered by clean hydroelectricity and is designed to produce ultra-low-carbon LNG, helping to displace higher-emission energy sources in Asia. This initiative is seen as a significant step toward supporting Indigenous economic reconciliation and advancing Canada's low-carbon energy future. With the project's construction set to commence in 2025, it is anticipated to create over 300 construction jobs and 100 long-term skilled positions, particularly benefiting Indigenous communities. The investment underscores a collaborative effort between industry, Indigenous nations, and the government to enhance Canada's energy security and economic growth while adhering to high environmental standards.
