Nissan Plans Xterra Return With Hybrid SUV In 2028

Nissan has confirmed the revival of its off-road SUV, the Xterra, with a planned production date set for 2028. The new Xterra will be built on a new body-on-frame platform shared with the redesigned Frontier pickup and other future models, likely manufactured at the Canton, Mississippi plant. It is expected to feature a blocky, rugged design reminiscent of its predecessors and will compete directly with vehicles like the Toyota 4Runner, Ford Bronco, and Jeep Wrangler. Powertrain options are anticipated to include a V-6 hybrid engine, potentially with an extended-range electric capability offering about 75 miles of gas-free driving, distinguishing it from rivals. Nissan aims to position the Xterra as an affordable, capable off-road SUV that appeals to adventurous buyers, reaffirming its commitment to this segment after a long hiatus since the original model was discontinued in 2015.
