Italy, Albania, UAE Sign Clean Energy Deal

Italy, Albania, and the United Arab Emirates have signed a significant clean energy cooperation deal aimed at enhancing renewable energy production in Albania. The agreement, valued at approximately €1 billion, involves the development of solar and wind energy projects in Albania, with some of the generated electricity to be transmitted to Italy via an underwater cable connecting the Albanian port of Vlora to Italy's Puglia region. Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni emphasized that this partnership aligns with Italy's sustainability commitments and is a pragmatic approach to transitioning away from fossil fuels, especially amid rising energy demands from AI technologies. Albanian Premier Edi Rama highlighted the importance of this collaboration for strengthening ties between the Western Balkans and Europe while underscoring Albania's commitment to renewable energy, which currently accounts for a significant portion of its energy generation. The agreement also includes the involvement of Italian grid operator Terna and the UAE National Energy Company, reflecting a strategic alliance aimed at enhancing energy security and sustainable development in the Mediterranean region. This trilateral partnership marks a crucial step in addressing global energy challenges through effective international cooperation.
