Texas Rep. McCaul, Foreign Policy Leader, Won't Seek 2026 Re-election

Representative Michael McCaul, a Texas Republican who has served in Congress since 2004, announced he will not seek re-election in 2026 after more than two decades representing Texas's 10th Congressional District. Known for his focus on national security and foreign policy, McCaul has chaired both the House Homeland Security and Foreign Affairs Committees and led efforts such as the China Task Force and advocacy for Ukraine funding. He expressed a desire to pursue new challenges related to national security outside of Congress while continuing to serve the country. McCaul's departure follows similar announcements by other Texas Republicans, including Morgan Luttrell, and marks the end of a significant career that included criticism of the Biden administration's Afghanistan withdrawal and being honored by the Ukrainian government. Despite attempts to extend his committee leadership, House Republicans' term limits led to his withdrawal from seeking another chairmanship. McCaul said his father’s World War II service inspired his public service path and that he aims to make America stronger and the world safer in his future endeavors.
