Russia Offers LNG, Energy Tech Collaboration to Mexico Amid US Import Dependence
Russia has offered to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Mexico and share advanced energy technologies, including oil extraction, refining, and electricity distribution, to help Mexico reduce its heavy reliance on U.S. natural gas imports. Russian Energy Minister Sergey Tsiviliov highlighted Moscow’s readiness to collaborate across the entire energy production chain, emphasizing the suitability of their technologies for challenging geological conditions. Mexico currently imports around 70-72% of its natural gas primarily from the U.S., creating vulnerabilities amid geopolitical tensions and U.S. protectionist policies under President Donald Trump. Mexico’s state oil company Pemex is seeking to boost domestic production by reopening wells, while the government plans to double its strategic gas storage capacity by 2025-2026 to improve energy security. This Russian initiative is part of a broader Kremlin strategy to expand energy partnerships in regions traditionally dominated by U.S. influence, with the Mexican government yet to respond to Russia’s overtures. The cooperation could significantly aid Mexico in diversifying its energy sources and strengthening its energy infrastructure.
