US, UK Expand and Debate Free School Meal Access

The US and UK are expanding free school meal programs to combat food insecurity and reduce stigma. In the US, St. Tammany Parish, LA and Dorchester School District Two, SC will offer universal free breakfasts and lunches for the 2025–2026 school year through the federally funded Community Eligibility Provision, removing the need for applications. Michigan's universal free meal program is at risk as lawmakers debate its future, while advocates highlight its importance for student well-being. In the UK, starting September 2026, all families receiving Universal Credit, regardless of income, will qualify for free school meals, extending eligibility to nearly 40,000 more children in Hull and East Yorkshire and 500,000 nationwide. Education experts in the UK are urging a switch to auto-enrolment to ensure all eligible students benefit. Summer meal programs in South Carolina and Wisconsin continue to provide free meals to children during school breaks.
