Bank of England Seeks Public Input on Future Banknote Themes
The Bank of England has launched a public consultation inviting UK residents and British citizens abroad to help select the theme for the next series of banknotes, marking the first major redesign in over five decades. Since 1970, banknotes have featured notable historical figures, beginning with William Shakespeare, but the Bank is now considering six potential themes: notable historical figures; architecture and landmarks; arts, culture and sport; noteworthy historical events; innovation; and nature. The consultation allows the public to suggest alternative themes and will shape designs for the £5, £10, £20, and £50 notes, while maintaining the monarch's portrait on all notes. Victoria Cleland, the Bank's chief cashier, emphasized that banknotes are not only a means of payment but also serve as symbolic representations of national identity and an opportunity to celebrate the UK. Depending on the chosen theme, a second round of public feedback may be sought to determine specific images, which could range from British wildlife and landscapes to iconic buildings or cultural symbols. The Bank aims to ensure that the new notes are high-quality, resilient, and accessible, with final designs to be announced in due course.
