Officer beats detainee
Officer Joseph Harris of the Jonesboro Police Department in Arkansas was fired after video footage emerged showing him violently assaulting a handcuffed detainee, Billy Lee Coram, in the back of a patrol car. The video, which depicts Harris punching and elbowing Coram, who was reportedly under the influence of fentanyl and wearing a hospital gown, prompted immediate disciplinary action by Police Chief Rick Elliott. Harris had previously faced disciplinary actions, including a suspension for excessive force, and is currently involved in a wrongful death lawsuit. Elliott expressed shock and referred the case to local prosecutors and the FBI, emphasizing the need for accountability and transparency. The incident has sparked outrage among community leaders, with calls for broader police reforms. Coram, who was being returned to jail after a prior escape, was subsequently charged with third-degree escape following the violent encounter.
