Tennessee State Coach Brian Collins Joins Memphis Grizzlies Staff

Brian "Penny" Collins, head coach of Tennessee State University's men's basketball team, has accepted an assistant coaching position in player development with the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies, marking a significant transition from HBCU basketball to the professional ranks. Over seven seasons at Tennessee State, Collins revitalized the program, leading the Tigers to multiple winning seasons, including a 17-16 record and a semifinal appearance in the 2024 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, while emphasizing player development on and off the court. Tennessee State Director of Athletics Dr. Mikki Allen praised Collins for building a family-oriented culture and a competitive program that earned respect within the conference and beyond. Collins' move is notable as few coaches make the leap from HBCU programs to the NBA, potentially opening doors for future coaches from similar backgrounds. Assistant coach Erik Buggs, a Memphis native with strong coaching credentials, has been named interim head coach as Tennessee State navigates this leadership transition.
